
| Introduction Each year the San Antonio Chapter of Tuskegee Airmen, Inc. (SAC-TAI) awards a maximum of six (6) Educational Assistance Awards to deserving high school seniors with plans to pursue a collegiate degree and career in aviation, aerospace technology and research; although all applicants are considered. The value of SAC-TAI Educational Assistance Awards will be one thousand dollars ($1,000.00) each. Awards are for one year only. These deserving young men and women selected for the SAC-TAI Educational Assistance Awards are automatically entered into competition for “Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation” scholarship awards. The number of available scholarship awards, for individual years, is directly related to income received from investments. This year,over forty (40) awards of one thousand five hundred dollars ($1,500.00) will be available. The $1,500.00 awards are for one year only. One (1) twenty thousand dollar ($20,000.00) Pratt and Whitney Award will be given to the scholar who demonstrates a sincere aptitude for and pursuit of a career in aviation, aerospace technology or research. This is a four-year award, paid in increments of $5,000 per year. The student must maintain a two point five (2.5) grade point average (GPA) and continue in the selected career path. Eligibility Requirements/Procedures: Application forms and instructions may be obtained from high school guidance counselors, or downloaded from this site. Completed application packages must be returned to the chapter address indicated on the application, postmarked on or before (closed for 2012). Each applicant must submit a two (2) page essay containing: a brief biographical sketch, educational aspirations, career goals and an explanation of why financial aid is essential. · Additionally, the applicant must include a single page essay entitled “The Tuskegee Airmen” which reflects an overview of their history. Essays must be typed, double-spaced with 1-inch margins on 8.5” x 11” paper. Please note, all attachments to the application must not exceed 8.5” x 11” in size. To validate the financial status of the applicant, a copy of parent(s)’ latest IRS Form 1040 (preferably 2011) through adjusted gross income line. If not required to file Form 1040, provide official alternative source document to verify income, such as statement from Public Social Services, Pensions or SSI. Documents Required with the Application: 1. Official Copy of Student’s High School Transcript, senior year schedule and first semester grades. 2. A copy of parent(s)’ LATEST IRS Form 1040 (preferably 2011) through adjusted gross income line or other OFFICIAL document. 3. Three Letters of Recommendation (From Counselors, Instructors, Community Leaders, etc.) 4. “The Tuskegee Airmen” Essay (Typed, double spaced, not to exceed one [1] page) 5. Brief Personal Essay (Typed, double spaced, not to exceed two [2] pages). 6. List of Extracurricular and Community Activities (including Junior ROTC, Civil Air Patrol, BSA, GSA, or Explorer Scouts). Selection Procedures: Applications for educational assistance awards are screened, verified as deemed appropriate, and competitively evaluated. The San Antonio Chapter Scholarship Committee evaluates application files determined worthy of further consideration. Using a scale of one hundred (100) points, the committee considers academic achievement, extra curricular and community activities, relative financial need, recommendations, and both essays to competitively rank applicants for local award selection and subsequently, nation-wide “Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation” competition. All applicants will be given notification of their status. Award Payment Certification: San Antonio Education Assistance Chapter Awards: Education Assistance Award selectees may enroll in the institution of their choice. After matriculation, registrars of selected schools must send verification of enrollment and curriculum (semester course schedule) to the San Antonio Chapter. Individual award payments (made payable to student or parent) will be mailed by the San Antonio Chapter when the required verifications have been received no later than September 30th of the program year. Tuskegee Airman Scholarship Foundation Awards: Scholarship selectees may enroll in the institution of their choice. After matriculation, registrars of selected schools must send verification of enrollment and curriculum (semester course schedule) to the Tuskegee Airmen Scholarship Foundation for scholarship selectees. Individual award payments (made payable to student or parent) will be mailed by Wells Fargo Bank, Los Angeles when the required verifications have been received. Award Payment Limitation: All scholarship awards must be paid within one year from date of selection notification. |
